  • Tightness or pain in the chest, back, arms, neck or jaw.

  • Shortness of breath.

  • Light-headedness, nausea, sudden dizziness or, vomiting.

  • Pain that is radiating to the shoulder, arm, back, neck, jaw, teeth or sometimes the upper belly.

  • Unexplained tiredness.

PAIN BETWEEN THE SHOULDER BLADES

Pain experienced between the shoulder blades is a common issue. One contributing factor to this discomfort may stem from the limited mobility of this particular area within the spine. The attachment of ribs to all twelve thoracic vertebrae restricts movement in this region.

Reduced movement can arise in both the vertebrae and ribs of the thoracic spine. Typically, this results in localised pain between the shoulder blades. However, in some instances, this discomfort may radiate along the ribs or extend towards the chest. Additionally, reduced movement in the spinal vertebrae and rib joints often coincide with muscle tension, further exacerbating the sensation of pain.

Navigating the different causes of shoulder pain can be challenging, and it is recommended that you consult with one of our chiropractors for further assessment and treatment.

COMMON CAUSES OF PAIN BETWEEN THE SHOULDER BLADES

Pain in the region between the shoulder blades can be attributed to various factors within the body. These pains may manifest as intense, burning, or stabbing sensations, and might be worsened but by movements, breathing or coughing. Some individuals may experience pain during periods of inactivity or even at night. Depending on the location, quality and symptoms experienced, our chiropractors are trained to diagnose this effectively and exclude any medical causes for the pain. Pain between the shoulder blades is commonly misdiagnosed for muscular pain, when the pain is actually coming from the spine or the ribs. If you are unable to get rid of your shoulder pain, consider seeing a chiropractor who will identify and treat the underlying causes, improve function and reduce pain.

‘Locked’ Thoracic Spine

Reduced mobility within the joints of the thoracic spine ranks among the most prevalent sources of discomfort in this area. In severe cases, this limited mobility may cause pain when breathing, exacerbating the feeling of tightness. While such issues may not be evident on X-rays, chiropractors are trained to effectively locate and address these issues through manipulation or mobilisation of joints.

‘Locked Rib’

Reduced mobility in the ribs, or the joints between the ribs and spine or sternum can provoke pain between the shoulder blades, potentially radiating towards the chest. Chiropractors are trained to effectively improve the movement of these joints and reduce the discomfort experienced.

Muscle Tension or Knots’

Muscle tension or the presence of knots is easily identifiable and best addressed through targeted muscle therapy or dry needling.

Trigger Points

Trigger points, characterised by knots in muscles and tendon attachments, that result in referred pain to adjacent areas.

Postural Changes

Alterations in body posture can inadvertently increase strain on the thoracic spine, leading to heightened muscle tension and discomfort.

Reduced Mobility

Over time, joints and associated muscles may stiffen due to improper loading or insufficient physical activity. This may result in pain, tension, and compensatory movements in other areas of the body.

Myofascial Dysfunctions

Muscles surrounded by fascia, a membrane like structure, may progressively stiffen, impeding their natural flexibility. This can culminate in chronic postural changes, limited mobility, and subsequent discomfort.

Stress

While not a direct cause, stress can exacerbate discomfort in the thoracic spine, particularly in instances of joint or muscular stiffness.

TREATMENT APPROACHES FOR PAIN BETWEEN THE SHOULDER BLADES

A comprehensive treatment plan is often necessary to effectively alleviate pain in this region. Employing a combination of therapeutic modalities can often yield the most favourable outcomes.

Manipulative Treatment

Specific chiropractic techniques that aim to release joints with restricted mobility, facilitating improved movement and comfort.

Trigger Point Therapy

Targeting "active" trigger points can alleviate referred pain, with various techniques such as pressure application, cross friction massage techniques, dry needling, and a mix of different therapeutic techniques.

Deep Tissue Massage

A rigorous massage technique effectively dislodges tension and muscle knots, offering relief to individuals with chronic discomfort. Our Remedial Massage Therapists are highly skilled in deep tissue and sports massage techniques.

Dry Needling
