Chiropractic Care for Children and Infants

Watching our children grow with strength, confidence, excitement and enthusiasm is what every parent want. From a musculoskeletal healthcare provider's perspective, this is also something we aim to achieve with every child we see.

From a research perspective, the best available evidence can guide us to know that a delay in milestones in infancy often persists, and these children tend to show poorer performance to their peers also in preschool years.

If a baby and young child has asymmetry of movement or posture, this is also something that tend to persist. Why is this?

The first year of life and the younger years is when the brain is wiring itself for life. There is an explosion of new neurological pathways being formed in the brain and we start making sense of movement and the world. This is when we learn our movement patterns, what is easy for our body and what is hard.

Our body will always choose the easiest way to turn, crawl, sit, walk or run. This happens automatically, but it is not always optimal movement patterns. This can be due to torticollis/side bending of the head, plagiocephaly, a complicated labour and many other causes such as neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy. If we are much stronger on one side of our body, we will choose to compensate and use our more dominant side instead. Children with abdominal weakness, tend to curve their lower backs and their stomachs curve outwards. This often persist into childhood and adulthood and they increase their chances of injuries during sports and may later have to deal with the low back pain that comes with the facet joint overload.

Some asymmetry is of course normal, however, when
